FUMBLOG is open!

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Welcome to Fumblog.

Every day I’ll post up new art until I go mad. How long that’ll be I don’t know, but I hope it’s a slow decline rather than a heady rush, because that’ll make for more interesting art further down the slope. The idea of Fumblog was to post up a completely random array of things, sometimes there’ll be random sketches and thoughts, sometimes finished work, sometimes guest artists, and every now and then WHOLE COMICS posted up here. Completely free, for you to enjoy or scorn as you see fit. And of course, there’ll be these regular blog updates for news of forthcoming attractions and fun stuffs.

Some of the work here will be old, some new, some you may have seen before if you’ve followed my work, but all of it is intended to be a distracting way to waste a bit of your life. Daily amusement, other than kicking pigeons. And if you do like what I do, please help fund the madness! There are ways on the sidebar to the left, and soon there will be ads. oh joy! ads!

Lastly, although this thing has been great fun to make, I am no coder by any means, so I may have missed something in the fuzzy-brained week it took me to build Fumblog. So if you have any comments, suggestions, anything you wanna say about Fumblog, please do comment!

And tell everyone about it! ^_^ thanks!

The CNI interview (part one)

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

So I was interviewed last night by the quite lovely Jimmy and Joe at Comic News Insider, you can hear part one of the interview if you CLICK HERE, or alternatively search out the CNI podcast on Itunes and download it there!

We talk about Bear, Ubu Bubu, Angry Little Robot, and a host of other things. Part two of the interview will be up next week. I have learnt from doing verbal interviews that i sound drunk, confused, essentially like someone just shook me awake from a hedge and asked me about my career. I also say yeah, no, and y’know a lot. But if you can handle that, go check it out, it’s a great podcast anyway despite my english voice smeared over this one.

jx.

ps. new WHUBBLE up every wednesday. Today is wednesday. thus, it is whubble.

Space Raoul signing now on the 10th January!

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

Apologies once more to those who were going to come to the Space Raoul signing at the Science Museum last month, but cancelling it was unavoidable (Waterstones had no books for me to sign! That kinda puts a dampener on a book signing).

But I’m chuffy to say we have now rescheduled it, and I’ll be at the Science Museum on the 10th of January, signing copies, looking scared of children, and drawing awkward pictures in your books for you. Hooray! time yet to be confirmed, I’ll let you know when I do, but it’ll probably be mid-afternoon again. I hope to see you there! Please come. I don’t want to look lonely. Oh god.

(to celebrate this event, sunday 21st december’s fumblog.com daily comic will be an exclusive 2-pager from the Space Raoul book. Double hooray with a dollop of British huzzah jam!)

Happy Christmas!

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Hey! Hi!

Happy christmas to everyone :)

Coupla interviews are up and about if you’re so inclined. The second part of the interview I did with Comic News Insider is up HERE. I really am a bit welsh. I didn’t just say it to cover my ass. I’m also a bit italian (orrrr gypsy), so those are the two demographics I can comment on without being racist. Thanks multiculturalism!

Also did an interview more Whubble-related for Andy at Comixtreme, clicky clicky to see!

I seem to remember this time last year saying 2008 had better be a lot better than 2007 which was dire. It’s certainly been a crazy year this year, everything in my life has uprooted and changed, real lows as well as highs. Next year too worries me, work is threatening to drastically dry up (thanks stupid economy). And yet I find myself sitting here and feeling incredibly lucky for what I have. I have very good people around me, and I love what I do. I guess no matter how sparse next year gets, those are the things that’ll see me through.

And I have a lot planned for 2009, amongst them new comics, books, tshirts and of course every single damn day something new on Fumblog.com. There are also new slightly secret things just coming over the horizon which i’ll be able to talk about nearer the time. If work goes away, you just have to make your own I suppose.

Anyway, everyone can reflect on the end of a year and their highs and lows, I don’t mean to whine. I am in a good place.

Thank you all for your support, it means a huge amount, and I hope I can repay it throughout next year ^_^ Happy fucking christmas, it will be mighty.

ps. xmas card is up tomorrow (25th) on fumblog.

I need your help!

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

hope you all had a great new year! ^_^ mine was spent asleep in front of Kung-Fu Panda. I can think of worse ways to spend it.

So, to 2009.

For me this year is a biggy, because my 3-year Cartoon Network contract comes to an end at the end of january. While this contract was intended to make sure I didn’t sell ideas to any other tv companies, one of the unfortunate side-effects was that I wasn’t allowed to sell my ideas to ANYONE! As such, a lot of potential work dropped me, as a publication often won’t want to print your work unless they can have at least some of the rights to it. Essentially, I lost the control to give my work to who I choose.

Now obviously there have been ways around it in certain cases, but for the most part what was originally an exciting contract to work exclusively for CN turned into a chokehold on my career (without, despite CN’s best efforts, any tv shows for the trouble!). There were a particularly troublesome seven months a year ago when i had NO work because of this. So, while I’m sad nothing came out of this contract, i’m very excited to be in control of my creations again.

So, I’m going wherever I can with what I do. I’ve produced little portfolio booklets showing my main characters which I’m going to be taking to potential clients. And here is where i need your help. before, i have asked for help here in similar matters and people have responded in spades. Fact is, I really need to find some more work, somewhere to put the things I do, and if you can help at all I would really appreciate it.

I have a lot ready to go. Everything from Angry Little Robot to My Own Genie, from Whubble to Bear, from Raoul to Bohda Te, I’m pitching them all wherever I think they could benefit. I’ll be opening my work up to Video Game companies, taking ALR and Whubble to newspapers, syndicates. I have this children’s book called Potomibo I want to take to book publishers. I’ll be going back to card companies, and showing my work to more children’s comics. and so much more besides. I like what I have and I want to see how far I can take it all.

So if you can think of good places, if you happen to know any contacts, if you think you can help in any way, that would be amazing. if you’d prefer to email me, i’m at sixtyfootmonkey@yahoo.com. This is me, trying to find a new way in.

thank you ^_^ i will show my gratitude with cake for everyone. (cake isn’t real).

Anyway.

So yes! Fumblog is 43 days old! Happy 43-day birthday, Fumblog! I hope you’re enjoying it, I think there’s been a nice range of stuffs put up so far, and I’m excited about all the things yet to post. There’s some hot shiznit in here.
Thank you for all your comments and feedbacks, they are very gratefully received. If you have anything you’d like to see more of on the site, let me know. Any particular comics or things that tickled you, leave a comment and i’ll see if I can rustle out some more. I got my own favourites, but my taste is weird.
Also, you may have noticed google ads appearing on the page. Sad commercial whore I am, I know, but if you click those i think i earn nearly 0.002 cents. Hooray! Also on the site are project wonderful ads, if you want to advertise here just click them to bid, or if you know a site I should be advertising on, let me know. Thanks!

Lastly a reminder, tomorrow (saturday 10th jan), science museum bookstore, london. Space Raoul signing. 3pm till 4pm. Come along and say hi! Don’t be weird. thanks! ^_^

The Space Raoul signing!

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

I am slowly putting the dots on (thats the technical term, right?) the last five pages of Ubu Bubu 4. doing this really makes you go blind/homicidal, and takes far longer than I’m sure it should. but it will be done! hurgghle!

Anyway yes! The signing for Space Raoul happened on saturday at The Science Museum, and I’ll confess it was super fun. I get nervous about these things. I got little sleep the night before and while it’s always nice to meet people who buy your work, i’m not naturally predisposed to showing myself off so it feels very unnatural. What? I have the job of a hermit! the only things I talk to when I’m at home are jeremy kyle and my own left hand with some crude face drawn on it.
I was really chuffed that people turned up, though notably no kids (for this is a kids book). Despite that, Kirsten at Waterstones (thank you Kirsten!) put out moon rocks and phallic space jellies. I got to meet a lot of you guys who comment here, which was great, and we even ran over our time, signing for an extra hour.
here are some photos!

(photos by the awesome Frankie, thanks yous!)

i think that was all. by the way I’m working on a new Bear competition, with a really hot shit prize. watch this space!

bad news for comics, also interviews and free stuffs!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

seven important things!

1) THIS is bad news, whether you’re a comic artist or a comic buyer. this impacts us all and makes things (and by things, i mean the future of comics) extreeeemely difficult and puts at risk your favourite titles. Seriously, it’s hard enough already, this is just another punch to the head for alternative comics, and will result in a lot of comics dying before they get a chance. Check out SLG pres Dan’s response in the article.

2) Hey america! Kudos on the Pres!

3) I did an interview t’other week, talking about Bear and y’know alls that, with the exceptional Den Of Geek. you can read it HERE

4) it looks like Topatoco might also be dropping the Knockers tshirts too!

so grab em while they’re hot! click HERE to look see!
(don’t worry though, in place of these fine tshirts, we will soon have brand NEW fine tshirts! more soon!)

5) did you check out fumblog.com yesterday? there you can find the page i did for Slave Labor’s anniversary book, which i believe is still available to order, featuring loads more amazing SLG artists!
But if you wanna see my page, clicky..

6) but check out TODAY’s mighty free giveaway!

seriously this week is great on fumblog.com, there’s even more awesome stuff coming up, EVERY DAY! come on in and wallow around in the comic mud! comic dirty is cool!

7) laaaastly, today is WHUBBLE day!

aaand i’m spent. g’nite!

Corporate Skull!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

i’ve kinda neglected livejournal a bit recently, and thats rubbish because it always seemed to be where the friendlier people were. so to redress things a little, i’ve set up a livejournal for Corporate Skull, the strip i did on Fumblog which seemed to get a good response for such a half-baked idea :p so i’ll do some new ones, randomly, sporadically, but that’s the point of this livejournal for him. add him as a lj friend and i’ll post his strips up there every time they show up on Fumblog, so if you like his adventures you have them all in one place.

a few other changes to fumblog, some design tweaks, a coupla banners you can nab if you fancy, and a selection of links. I’m also gearing up for the first full comic giveaway sometime soon, probably in the next month, along with a coupla competitions. IT WILL BE SO GOOD YOU WILL SOIL YOUR PANTS WITH YOUR OWN MELTED EYES SLIDING DOWN YOUR SPINE TO THEIR COLONIC EXIT.

lastly, WHUBBLE DAY! But you knew that.

ps. if you ever thought you could have sexual relations with a webcomic, make it the INCREDIBLE Bob and Bob! and make Phil draw more!
